How to Prepare for a Poker Tournament

Weather you are preparing for your first poker tournament or you’re a seasoned veteran there are a few things you can do to make sure you are prepared for your next upcoming tournament. We’ll take a look at a few of them here that will help you be fresh and in best shape to dominate your next tournament.

Practice practice practice

This sort of goes without saying, but the more hands you play the better you are going to do in the tournament. Squeeze in a few games with friends or find some tables nearby the venue. If neither of these are options for you, don’t forget that there are copious options online to play a few hands. Whether this is for money or free games it is worthwhile as it will get you in the flow of things for the tournament.

Rest up

On the other hand don’t over do the playing. You need your rest to help you think clearly and keep your brain ticking over at optimal levels. It can be tempting to get to the venue, drop your bags off and head straight for the bar – particularly if you are competing somewhere exotic. This is not your best choice for obvious reasons. Okay one or two drinks might not make much difference but don’t forget why you are there – to make money and party afterwards with your winnings.

Keep up to date

Find some time to get online and watch a few poker tutorial videos. There are some great ones online for all levels and there is always something new to learn – never think that you know it all. Along with videos there are also some great podcasts out there that break down strategies, concepts, and hands that are invaluable.

Prepare

Make sure you have everything you need for the day. This includes having the right clothes and don’t forget to take food and drink. Being comfortable at the table will help you stay focused and relaxed.
